Overview
Upgrade Arena was an original PlayVS tournament format built around a compelling competitive mechanic: the deeper you advance in the bracket, the better your gaming setup becomes. I led the marketing and broadcast strategy for this event, which ran October 11–19, 2024, with the championship broadcast airing live on October 19.
Campaign Components
The tournament featured 64 teams — 192 players total — competing in a single-elimination bracket format. The “upgrade” mechanic was central to all promotional messaging, framing each round of advancement as both a competitive achievement and a tangible reward. This structure gave the tournament a clear, shareable narrative arc that worked well across social content formats.
The live broadcast on October 19 was supported by two hours of co-streaming from NikkiJustine and GarrettG, bringing their established audiences directly into the Upgrade Arena viewership. Live chat engagement was strong, with 356 unique chatters participating during the broadcast — a meaningful community indicator for an amateur-level esports event.
Social content ran across the duration of the tournament, with promotional clips, bracket updates, and highlight moments driving continuous traffic to the livestream and keeping the broader PlayVS community engaged between match days.
Results
The campaign generated 1.47M+ social impressions, 11,500+ live stream views, 308K+ total video views, and 13,200+ engagements across all content. The co-streaming strategy proved effective at expanding reach beyond the core PlayVS audience, pulling in viewers from established creator communities who may not have had prior exposure to scholastic esports.
Upgrade Arena demonstrated that novel competitive formats — paired with creator amplification — can drive disproportionate engagement relative to production investment.
